CMCSS is currently offering several incentives in an attempt to lessen the impact of the driver shortage. The new policy will also not affect any students who are provided with special transportation due to Individualized Education Programs. Students who live in areas with four or more lanes of traffic and no crossing guard service, on roads with insufficient road width (less than 24 feet) and a speed of more than 35 miles per hour, or on roads with no sidewalks and a speed greater than 35 miles per hour. Some students will be an exception to the new rule, though. The new changes still have the system exceeding those state requirements for many students. To avoid school traffic delays, motorists should take alternate routes or plan additional travel time.According to CMCSS, the state law does not require school systems to provide any bussing for any students who live within a mile and a half of their zoned schools. Barksdale Elementary on Madison Street.Northeast Schools Campus on Trenton Road.New Providence Middle School and Minglewood Elementary on Cunningham Lane.Hazlewood Elementary on Tiny Town Road.Northwest High School on Lafayette Road.Rossview Schools Campus on Rossview Road.Motorists should expect heavy traffic and delays throughout the school year in these areas: Violations involving school buses can result in a fine and points on your license. Drivers meeting a school bus on this type of road (examples: Fort Campbell Boulevard, Providence Boulevard and Tiny Town Road) would be required to stop in both directions. A turn lane in the middle of a four-lane highway is not considered a barrier.When driving on a highway with separate roadways for traffic in opposite directions, divided by a median space or barrier (examples: SR 76/MLK Parkway and Jack Miller Boulevard), drivers in the opposite direction of bus travel do not have to stop but should proceed with caution. Motorists should stop and wait until the red flashing lights are turned off, the stop arm is retracted and the bus begins to move again.
